The King’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious awards for UK business, designed to recognise and encourage outstanding achievements in the fields of Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility).
Previously known as the Queen’s Awards, the scheme was instituted by Royal Warrant in 1965 and the first Awards were made in 1966. Each year some 200 or so companies across the UK are successful, and Cambridgeshire typically produces a good crop of outstanding winners, with some receiving awards in two categories. Winners are entitled to use the King’s Award for Enterprise logo for a period of five years and are presented with a Grant of Appointment signed by His Majesty The King and a commemorative crystal trophy by the Lord-Lieutenant. Winners also send two representatives to a reception at Buckingham Palace in the presence of senior members of The Royal Family.
