Sebastian Kindersley has devoted much of his career to public service and local government. He served as an elected Councillor on South Cambridgeshire District Council from 1999 to 2018, including a term as Leader of the Council in 2005–06. Elected to Cambridgeshire County Council in 2005, he went on to serve two terms as Chair of the Council – a unique privilege. His wider public service roles included membership of the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Fire Authority and serving as the County Council’s Military Covenant Champion. He was the parliamentary candidate for South Cambridgeshire in the 2010 and 2015 General Elections and retired from frontline political life in 2025, when he was appointed an Honorary Alderman of Cambridgeshire in recognition of his contribution to public service.
Born in Scotland and brought up in Ireland, Sebastian moved to Cambridgeshire in 1987 to study at what is now Anglia Ruskin University. Alongside his public service career, he has built and led successful businesses in the information and analysis sector. He founded a media monitoring company based in Royston, which was sold in 2000, and now runs a competitor analysis consultancy specialising in retail financial services. He has also made a significant contribution to education and community life, serving as a school governor at Gamlingay and Barrington schools, chairing the Community & Partnerships Committee of the CAM Academy Trust, and leading the Sir John Jacobs Almshouse Charity as Chair. For 21 years he organised the RBL Poppy Appeal for Gamlingay and the Hatleys. His professional and voluntary work reflects a longstanding commitment to supporting communities, strengthening local institutions, and promoting public engagement.
