On Thursday 23rd November at Great St Mary’s Church in Cambridge, The Lord-Lieutenant presented Ms Patricia Joyce Covington with the British Empire Medal, for services to the community in Steeple Morden, Cambridgeshire.
Ms Covington has been a keen member of the community in Steeple Morden, working as postmistress for over 35 years as well as a key figure in the Morden’s branch of the Royal British Legion. She has supported numerous local charities through fundraisers as well as identifing and arranging support for the vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Lord-Lieutenant was assisted by Colonel Roger Herriot OBE DL and the citation was read by Mr Chris Parkhouse DL. The High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Dr Bharatkumar Khetani, Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, Councillor Sebastian Kindersley, Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Jenny Gawthorpe Wood were present, and the Revd Canon Jutta Brueck extended a warm welcome to the church.
Mrs Hayes was awarded with her British Empire Medal, for voluntary and charitable services in St Neot’s Cambridgeshire. Mrs Hayes served as a school crossing patrol for 43 years, escorting over a million children to cross the road safely to school, she has also raised funds for the Royal British Legion for a number of years.
